Nadler Challenger Pays Tribute to the Constitution on July 4th

Adam Sullivan, who is challenging Representative Jerrold Nadler for the Democratic nomination in New York’s 8th Congressional District, observed Independence Day by honoring the Constitution.

Sullivan joined noted civil rights attorney Norman Siegel, State Senator Bill Perkins, the Granny Peace Brigade and Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping for the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and Bill of Rights at Strawberry Fields in Central Park.

Campaigning on the promise that, if elected, he will uphold the Congressional Oath of Office “to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” Sullivan contends that Nadler has broken his Oath of Office—an oath he has taken eight times—by refusing to pursue impeachment against President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

“Does anyone here think it's too late for impeachment?" Sullivan asked the large crowd gathered round the Imagine icon, a question which elicited a resounding “No!” Sullivan answered back, “Only the people in Congress seem to think so.”

Afterwards, Sullivan supporters took to the streets with a march through the district, collecting petition signatures in a scene familiar to New Yorkers at this time of year.

“Congressman Nadler serves as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties,” Sullivan explained. “It is time he took seriously this solemn pledge he made to his constituents.”

“This Administration has refused to comply with Congressional subpoenas intended to get to the bottom of its outrageous and illegal acts,” Sullivan continued. “The only remedy that the Constitution provides to curb such abuses by the Executive branch is impeachment. By not initiating impeachment hearings for political reasons, Nadler and the Democratic Congressional leadership have essentially stripped the Legislative branch of the only means of stopping this or any President from doing further damage to our country and the Constitution. The time to impeach is now.”

Sullivan and his campaign team expect a strong completion of the petitioning period and look forward to devoting the remainder of the summer to campaigning and raising public awareness about the Congressional imperative to defend the Constitution.
